Most of the adjuncts I know are excellent teachers, committed and talented and generous. And it’s still true that every one of them—if they had the mental calm that comes with job security and health insurance, the focus that comes with having an office in which to work, the support and professional development that comes with being fully integrated into the workplace, and the time that comes with not having to hustle and scramble to scratch out a living—is able to do even better.

Guernica: A Journal of Arts & Politics
Dear Colleague,
We couldn’t agree more with Rachel Riederer. And we’re willing to forego that office.
As capable thinkers, scholars, researchers and artists, over the last several months we’ve assessed information, reviewed history, and listened to personal testimony regarding adjunct unions and regarding the Service Employees International Union in particular.
In the spirit of collegiality, we of every rank support unionization, believing that equitable conditions contribute to the well-being of our entire CCA community: faculty, staff, administrators, students. We have neither interest in nor energy for divisiveness. The union is not an outside force--it is many of us, working together to improve working and learning conditions. SEIU provides us with organizational know-how and legal expertise, but we choose the structure and goals of our union. The literal meaning of “union” is a coming together, and that is what a yes vote will facilitate.
We want CCA to reach its extraordinary potential as a leader in community-building, social justice, and creative pursuits. Please join us in supporting a “yes” vote to form a union to benefit us all.
Yours,
